Weymouth Hockey Club veteran player, Ian Metcalf, was selected to play for the England over 55s team in the Hong Kong World Championships and is going to come back to Weymouth with a Winners Medal. In a recent communication he tells us…

“Final email from Hong Kong but the most important!
Won the semi final against Hong Kong yesterday 3-0 for place in final today.

YIPPEE! the boys made it – World Champions – Gold Medal winners against Australia!!
What an achievement. Full time score 1-1. Had to go to extra time – Golden Goal
in second half in last two minutes. Couldn’t have been closer. A very hard fought match in scorching temperatures. Needless to say the WAGS went wild. So proud of all of them – so well deserved.

Out for special end of tournament dinner tonight – I think we will celebrate in style – HOORAY for England!!!!”

Weymouth Hockey Club are very proud of Ian, their chairman, Matt Walkden, said “We knew he could do it, he does it for us on the pitch every Saturday, that’s why we offered some financial assistance to help get him there, there was no money offered from England Hockey to help so we had to!”
