Pilot gigs from across the South West descend on Lyme Regis for Regatta

Sunday, August 14th, will see pilot gig clubs from across the South West descending upon Lyme Regis to race against each other at the Lyme Regis Gig Club Regatta.

32-foot traditional Cornish Pilot Rowing Gigs from Bridport, Bristol, Clevedon, Ilfracombe, Sidmouth, Swanage, Teignmouth, Torridge and Weymouth are due to race with the Lyme Regis club that was founded in 2007.  The local club currently has over 100 members and is about to start building its third hand-crafted gig to be called ‘Tempest’.

Men’s Team Captain, Henry Barlow, said today: “Our first regatta last year was hugely successful, and was very well supported by both locals and visitors. This year we have altered the course to make the event even more spectator friendly, with lots of quick sprint races starting and finishing just off the high wall. With the event taking place on the last day of the towns Carnival week, we are hoping for lots of support again”.

The races will take place off of the Cobb Harbour wall starting at 11.30am.  Each gig is powered by six rowers, steered and directed by a coxswain. Races between the clubs will take place in a range of categories and the winners and runners-up will be announced on Sunday evening.

The Lyme Regis Gig Club’s main sponsors are Otter Brewery and Newlands Holiday Park, but we are indebted to many other members of the community who continue to help make everything possible.
