Lyme Regis Boat Launch

Once again the sun shone for another spectacular Launch Day at the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis.  With family, friends, vicars, and the BBC in tow, the Class of March 2010 launched their five boats into the harbour on 9th December.  A momentous day for the students, this launch was made all the more special, and romantic, by a surprise wedding proposal.  Onlookers cheered as student Matt Cotterill rowed out into the middle of the harbour with girlfriend Yvette, and got down on one knee.  She said yes!  Needless to say, the ring was wooden and hand-made by Matt himself.

Students of the Class of March 2010 came from Germany, Australia, Norfolk, Hampshire, Portland and London and had come from careers as diverse as catering and IT management, construction and the police force.  Having started the course as woodworking novices they ended the 38-week Boat Building course qualified boat builders – and their boats certainly proved this.

Yvonne Green, Principal of the Boat Building Academy, lamented the loss of such a great team of students “not only will we miss the students but we will also miss their families and loved ones who have really made a difference and contributed to the BBA community.”  Congratulations to student Ross Doherty and his wife Elisabet who are expecting a baby next year.  (2011 has been a great year for babies at the BBA as Instructor Mike Broome and his wife’s second baby, Ella, was born on 21st September and BBA Administrator Gemma Blathwayt is due to have her first baby in April.)

The next Launch will take place on 8th June 2011 where there’s set to be a record number of twelve boats launched – it’s not to be missed!
