A GREEN-fingered community group tasted the fruits of their labours with a harvest meal.

Chapelhay Community Playgarden celebrated the success of their Let It Grow project with a feast of chips, grown in their own garden.

During the summer children planted potatoes, carrots and other vegetables in the garden between Franchise Street and St Leonard’s Road in Weymouth.

Thirty keen gardeners descended on the site to have a party to celebrate the harvest.

Committee member Audrey Palmer said: “Despite the horrendous morning with the wind and rain we went ahead and did it anyway.

“Earlier in the year we got all the local children to plant carrots, tomatoes, potatoes and herbs.

“Then they dug up potatoes and our local Chinese takeaway, Ocean Hay, made them into chips and cooked them for us.

“It was really good fun and the chips were really delicious.”

She added: “We had an amazing number of potatoes, some of the ladies had brought some just in case the crop failed but we didn’t need them.

“We didn’t get that many carrots, but we did get quite a few tomatoes. Our herb garden is also doing really well – we have chives and parsley and people can just come in and take some whenever they want to.”

Committee member Joy Sangster, said that the day had been a big success.

She said: “We had a great time. It’s all about the local community coming together, it was lovely.

“It’s nice to get people to join in and take responsibility for that part of the community and make it better for everyone.”

The Chapelhay Community Playgarden association thanked Peter Chen at the Ocean Hay Chinese takeaway for the restaurant’s help, as well as everyone who turned up on the day.

The Playgarden Association regularly holds events and dinners with produce grown in the garden.
